As a child of the 80′s I was obsessed with the “Just Like Mom” Canadian game show.
My favourite part was the cook off. I just loved how the kids would put anything and everything into the mix. So, one day I decided to pretend I was on the show, and added some quite unsavoury ingredients to the cookie dough my mom had left for me to mix. I think I added ketchup and mustard.
Needless to say, my mom didn’t think they were so tasty, and made sure to keep a better eye on me when I helped with the baking!

My best cookie-mom story occurred two years ago at Christmas. We were baking cookies together and she had to step out to get some extra ingredients, telling me to hold off on the baking until she got back. She obviously didn’t trust me, but I wanted to show her that I had some prowess in the kitchen. Unfortunately, I should have listened to her because although I know my way around the kitchen, I don’t know baking very well. The recipe said to “cut the butter into the batter.” I didn’t know what that meant, so I simply cut the butter and then threw it in the stand mixer. Mom walked in the door as I was doing this, and started laughing hysterically at my interpretation of “cutting butter.” She couldn’t even control the laughing enough to explain to me what I’d done wrong until several minutes later. The cookies turned out fine, and to this day, she teases me about the day I tried to bake Christmas cookies and tells me that unless she’s around, I’m not allowed to even attempt these recipes.

Ohhhh cookies! Delicious, sweet, fresh, delightful… who can resist them?! But like Sweet Flour has stated, a cookie is more than just dough and chocolate chips. It’s about the smiles, the experience, and the loving memories that are created during the process! I myself have been lucky enough to experience the whole shibang of cookie making with my mother. She is a fabulous baker, and I hope that one day, I will be able to bake as great as her. Currently at 18 years old, where dating, going out with friends, school, and shopping are things that I truly enjoy and concentrate on, there is no doubt I would choose to bake cookies with my mom over all of the other activities. My favorite memory was not makign cookies from scratch with my mom like usual. It is actually when we made pre-made Philsbury chocolate chip cookies! It was different, it was unexpected, but most of all, it was FUN. It was a great bonding time, and even though we didn’t have to physically make the dough and add ingredients, the time spent was amazing. We had much fun teasing each other, talking about silly times, and just having a great mother-daughter bonding time – something that is usually hard to achieve since we are both busy. It just proved to me that baking cookies, no matter if you baked them fast, slow, with organic ingrediants, pre-made ingrediants… the memories shared will always be remembered and cherished.
